Professor Syarif is currently a researcher at the Centre for Economic Research (P2E), the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). His areas of expertise are politics and local government. As a researcher, Professor Syarif has published at least 114 academic papers and journal articles. He also supervises students and researchers at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.
In addition to his role as a researcher, Prof Syarif is currently a member of the Indonesian Democracy Index (IDI) Expert Team under the Ministry of Political, Legal and Security Affairs. He has also previously served as a member of the Indonesian Democracy Index (IDI) Expert Team under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
For his services, Prof. Syarif was awarded the Satyalencana Karya Satya XXX Years medal in 2014, the Satyalencana Karya Satya XX Years medal in 2007, and the Satyalencana Karya Satya X Years medal in 1994.
