Prof. Dr. Purwiyatno Hariyadi, CFS, was born in Pati, Central Java, on March 9, 1962. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Food Technology (Cum Laude) from the Bogor Agricultural University in 1984, a master’s degree (1990) in Food Science, and a Ph.D. (1995) in Food Science with a minor in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, United States.
He is currently a professor of food process engineering in the Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, IPB. Purwiyatno previously served as Chair of the Department of Food Science and Technology (2001–2004) and Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, IPB (1995–2001). From 2005 to 2015, Purwiyatno was Director of the Southeast Asian Food and Agricultural Science and Technology Center (SEAFAST) at the Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), IPB.
He served as Chair of the Indonesian Food Technology Association (PATPI) for two terms (from 2006 to 2010). Purwiyato also served as Chair of the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (MAKSI) from 2005 to 2008. Purwiyatno has been an active member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in the United States since 1990, and in June 2015 he was recognized as a Certified Food Scientist (CFS) by the International Food Science Certification Commission. Since 2000, Purwiyatno has been a member of the Institute for Thermal Processing Specialists (IFTPS) in the United States, a position he holds to this day. Since 2016, Prof. Hariyadi has been a member of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST)—the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST).
To date, Purwiyatno has also served as a scientific advisor to the International Life Science Institute—Southeast Asian Region (ILSI-SEAR). In 2005, he founded the food technology journal Food Review Indonesia and has served as its Editor-in-Chief ever since.
Purwiyatno has been a member of the Indonesian National Codex Committee (KOMNAS Codex) since March 2011. From 2017 to 2021, Purwiyatno served as Vice-Chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a global body under the FAO/WHO tasked with developing international food standards.
