Policy Brief: No. 08, November 2024. Free Nutritious Meal Program: A Holistic Approach to Improving the Quality of Life of the Indonesian People

Executive Summary

  • Indonesia still faces complex nutritional challenges. The high prevalence of stunting, anemia, and obesity (triple burden of malnutrition) shows the urgency to handle nutritional problems comprehensively and sustainably. The Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) should be designed not just to provide food but as a long-term investment to improve the quality of Indonesia’s human resources. By providing adequate nutrition from an early age, this program can improve future generations’ health, intelligence, and productivity.
  • The success of the MBG program requires strong collaboration between the central and regional governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and the community. A holistic approach involving various sectors will ensure the program’s sustainability and effectiveness.
  • Utilizing and consuming local food supports farmers and guarantees a steady supply of safe, diverse, and nutritious options. This approach promotes sustainability and decreases reliance on food imports while emphasizing the value of local wisdom, which has been proven effective over time.
  • To ensure the program’s success, it is imperative that the food safety assurance system be enhanced in conjunction with an intensified focus on nutrition education. This dual approach will guarantee access to safe food and equip individuals with the necessary knowledge to select and consume a balanced, nutritious diet.
  • To achieve the noble goals of the MBG program, several strategic steps must be taken. First, the supervision and monitoring systems should be strengthened to ensure food safety and quality. Second, the human resources capacity in the program should be enhanced. Third, community participation in planning and implementation is crucial. Additionally, promoting innovation in nutritious food provision and integrating with other development programs is essential. However, challenges like food contamination risk, inadequate nutritional quality, and distribution issues must be addressed through preventive measures.
